Human Caused Climate Change. Fraud and Fiction.

Chris Quartermaine has been a campaigner against climate alarmism for 30 years. In the following article he demolishes the myth that human CO2 emissions are the cause of climate change.

Why Human-caused Climate Change is a Myth

The main arguments for the AGW (anthropomorphic global warming) are the following:

CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and the more CO2 we put out, the more the climate will change.

CO2 is a heavier than air molecule and so will always tend to stay close to the ground. The proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere is currently 0.042% of which humans are currently contributing about 3% per year. It has been shown that historically CO2 levels are driven by temperature, rather than the other way around. The recent rise in CO2 levels from 280ppm to 420ppm is easily explainable by the fact the there has been an increase in temperature worldwide since the mid-19^th century due to the end of the Little Ice Age, when for example the Thames froze over. Another factor in the rise of CO2 is increased volcanic activity.

The overwhelmingly most important greenhouse gas is water vapour. The argument is that CO2 acts as a forcing agent causing water vapour to cause climate change. This has never been demonstrated scientifically.

Physicist William Happer has also found experimentally that CO2 has a saturation limit, so the more CO2 that is put out, the less effect it has as a greenhouse gas. So, a doubling of CO2 from 400ppm to 800ppm increases its radiative forcing by just 1%.

Furthermore, CO2 is used in greenhouses to enhance growth. The recent increase in CO2 has demonstrably been shown to increase the greening of the planet, allowing us the grow more food.

Finally, the whole premise of AGW is founded on a lack of understanding of the laws of thermodynamics. To quote the great comedy duo Flanders and Swann “Heat won’t pass from the cooler to the hotter, you can try it if you like, but you’d far better notter”. The atmosphere is invariably cooler than the ground, so the atmosphere cannot heat the ground.

The temperature of the earth is rising at an alarming rate.

The earth’s temperature is currently being measured in 2 ways. Firstly, through weather stations scattered around the earth. However, most of them are in the Western world. There is no worldwide coverage and assumptions have to be made about the temperature where there are no stations. Not only that, but many of these stations are in airports, which are subject to being affected by tarmac and jets taking off, and also the fact that historical comparisons cannot be made when airports have grown in size. Including many other stations located in urban areas which were once rural, this is called the ‘heat island effect’

Secondly, the world temperature can be measured using satellites, such as that being currently measured by Dr Roy Spencer in Huntsville, Alabama. These records show no global warming for the last 15 years.

Models predict that the planet will warm between 1.5 - 4.5°

The science of modelling the climate depends on a complete understanding of what drives climate on the earth. Our knowledge of that is still rudimentary, and it is also known that the climate is chaotic in character. If you assume that CO2 drives the climate, then the model produces GIGO, Garbage in, Garbage out.

None of the climate models so far have accurately predicted the actual climate change aside from one Russian model.

Warming is dangerous

The overwhelming evidence is that humans thrive better in a warm climate than a cold climate. Cold kills 10 times as many people as does heat.

Michael Mann produced a graph called the Hockey Stick, showing temperatures rising suddenly after millennia of stability. This is negated by the (now shown to be worldwide) climate events known as the Roman Warm period, The Medieval Warm period and the Little Ice Age. Evidence in Greenland shows humans thriving, growing crops until the advent of the Little Ice Age. Mankind always thrived better in the warm periods.

We should believe in AGW because 97% of scientists believe it to be true

First of all, science is not a belief. Many of those like Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil are behaving as though it is and espouse apocalyptic predictions which never come true. It is almost as though this climate change belief has become a new religion. Indeed, Greta Thunberg has recently been awarded a doctorate in Theology!

Secondly, the 97% figure came out of one of the most unscientific exercises ever performed. It has recently been shown that most scientists do not agree with it and retain a healthy scepticism. Ian Plimer, a well known geologist from Australia, has said that you can count the number of geologists on one hand who believe in AGW.

The sea level is rising and if we don’t do anything, our cities will become flooded.

Sea levels have been rising consistently for over 150 years, correlating with the end of the Little Ice Age. However, there is no acceleration in this rise. Human CO2 emissions became significant a long time after this time, and if there was to be any impact from human emissions, there would be an acceleration. The actual rise in sea level is about 3.4mm per year, which is barely significant compared with natural rise and fall of coastal land. There has been much talk of islands like the Maldives disappearing, but evidence of it is lacking. In practice, coral tends to cause islands to rise to keep up with sea level. Furthermore, if this was an issue, then climate activists such as Al Gore and Barack Obama wouldn’t be building mansions on the seashore.

For context, in 1989, a UN environmental official said that entire nations could be wiped off the earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend was not reversed by 2000.

There is clear evidence that the rise in world temperature is affecting the natural habitat of wildlife, trees and plants.

It would be very remarkable indeed if the climate did not change. It has been changing for billions of years, and it changes to this day. We have all experienced here in the UK milder winters and warmer summers. However, to ascribe this to human emissions simply does not correlate with the evidence. There are well known events such as the El Nino and La Nina, plus regular cycles such as the PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) and the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation, the 11 year sunspot variation and more long term sunspot cycles which have caused the Maunder Minimum (1645-1710) and the Little Ice Age. When these cycles coincide with each other, a GSM (Grand Solar Minimum) occurs. The next GSM is predicted to be between 2030 -2040, when it is possible that global temperatures will plummet.

We should follow the directions of the UN and other world bodies by reducing our carbon footprint and rely more on renewables to supply our energy

Hopefully the above should explain why this is unnecessary. However even if our carbon emissions were significantly affecting the climate, reducing our carbon output in the UK is hardly going to have any effect. China and India are building coal power stations at an increasing rate. Having things made in China not here is exporting our emissions to China.

The transfer to electric cars from petrol and diesel does not reduce carbon footprint at all. Electric car batteries rely on the destructive mining of lithium, cobalt, copper and nickel, which is hardly environmentally a good idea.

Renewable energy- solar cells and wind power- cannot provide a reliable source of energy without batteries to store the energy. Many commentators blithely expect these to be invented in time to allow them to replace current power generators. This has been accurately described as jumping out of a plane without a parachute on the assumption that the parachute will be invented by the time you land.
